Protein buyers feel squeeze as key whey prices surge in Europe

BBC Business reports that higher protein costs are hitting consumers in the UK, with demand rising as protein supplements move beyond gym users and as weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro encourage people to maintain protein intake while losing weight.

The outlet says supply has not kept pace, contributing to a sharp rise in the wholesale prices of key ingredients, which manufacturers later pass through to consumers as protein powders and high-protein versions of everyday foods become more expensive.

According to BBC Business, global market intelligence platform Expana found that the European price of one widely used type of high-protein whey was 130% higher in late August than a year earlier, and more than four times its level three years ago.

BBC Business also notes that other dairy protein inputs have risen too, including another type of whey protein up 60% year over year and a milk protein concentrate up 80%, while manufacturers say expanding production takes time and is costly.
