Senators question DOJ after bribery case against Gautam Adani dropped
The latest push follows a New York Times report that Adani, represented by a Trump personal lawyer, admitted offering a $10 billion US investment tied to resolving the case.
The Trump administration is facing renewed scrutiny after the US Department of Justice abandoned a fraud and bribery case against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, after he promised to invest $10 billion in the United States, according to the Guardian Business.
Two Democratic senators, Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal, have asked Attorney General Todd Blanche to answer questions about the DOJ’s handling of the case, including whether people close to President Trump were involved in the decision to drop it.
The dispute comes amid earlier court action, as a federal judge in New York agreed in August to dismiss the fraud case at prosecutors’ request despite concerns about irregularities in what the judge described as a highly unusual decision.
The senators pointed to additional reporting, with the Guardian Business noting that a New York Times report said Adani, represented by one of Trump’s personal lawyers, admitted to offering the $10 billion investment to resolve the criminal case, while the presiding judge said the investment played no role in the DOJ’s choice to abandon the matter.
