South Korea outlines phased denuclearisation plan for North Korea

South Korea has presented a phased approach to North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes, framing it as a pragmatic path toward eventual denuclearisation while acknowledging that North Korea’s acceptance is uncertain, according to SCMP Economy.

In a keynote speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, President Lee Jae Myung described a long-term, step-by-step sequence that begins with stopping the advancement of North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities, followed by a medium-term reduction.

Lee also urged the establishment of a peace protocol involving not only the two Koreas, but also the United States and China. Ahead of his trip to New York, he called for Washington to ease sanctions in return for North Korea stopping its nuclear programme, positioning sanctions relief as part of the overall negotiation approach.
