Sri Lanka opposition protests judicial reforms, including longer judge terms

The government says the reforms, including raising the retirement age of judges by two years, are meant to cut legal delays.

Sri Lanka’s main opposition staged street protests on Thursday against judicial reforms backed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s administration, including a proposal to raise the retirement age for judges.

The government says the changes are intended to reduce legal delays, and last month unveiled two bills to add more courthouses, create new appellate courts outside the capital, and recruit additional magistrates and staff.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa told thousands of supporters outside parliament that the legislation would undermine judicial independence, according to Reuters.

Reuters reported the bills would raise the retirement age of all judges by two years as part of a broader effort to expand the court system.
