Trump and Xi to discuss AI supremacy and human control
The BBC says the US stock market boom tied to AI company growth is a key backdrop as chip export restrictions continue to limit China’s access to advanced microchips.
Ahead of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, the BBC highlights that both countries are framing AI leadership as a competitive race, with China’s stance tied to broader ambitions for technology that strengthens national power.
The report says US frontier AI systems are currently leading on many benchmarks, citing work from Stanford researchers that showed Anthropic’s top model led by 2.7% as of March 2026, while a February 2025 model from China’s DeepSeek briefly matched a top US model.
The BBC notes that the US advantage is linked to the scale of investment in leading AI labs, which rely on large cash burn to build training and infrastructure, and that China faces additional constraints from sweeping restrictions preventing US firms from selling advanced microchips to Chinese companies.
China’s foreign ministry, according to the BBC, warned that narratives of threat and confrontation hinder global AI governance, calling for cooperation to ensure AI benefits all, as new models continue to emerge regularly in both countries.
