Trump, Xi open high-stakes summit at White House with military ceremony
The summit launch included an arrival ceremony with nearly 500 military personnel on the White House South Lawn and opening remarks from both leaders.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump began a high-stakes summit in Washington on Thursday, with Xi’s first visit to US soil since 2015, according to SCMP Economy.
The leaders started with a formal arrival ceremony on the White House South Lawn and Rose Garden, featuring nearly 500 military personnel, the Chinese and American national anthems performed by the US Marine Band, and remarks from both presidents.
In his remarks, Xi said he was ready to work with Trump to steer the China-US relationship toward the future and called for stronger communication and continued dialogue between the two countries.
SCMP Economy said the summit comes after weeks of frustration, delays, and posturing leading up to the meeting.
