Turkey to gradually hand Bashiqa base control to Iraq
The handover follows progress on security measures implemented by Iraq, according to a joint statement by Turkey and Iraq.
Turkey said it will gradually hand over control of its Bashiqa-Zilkan base in northern Iraq to the Iraqi federal government. The Turkish presidency announced the plan in a joint statement with its neighbor, citing progress achieved by security measures implemented by Iraq.
The statement said Turkish forces will transfer the base according to an agreed mechanism and timetable. It also described the move as linked to the security steps in place in Iraq.
The announcement followed a Wednesday meeting in New York between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, according to SCMP Economy, citing a joint statement.
