US initial jobless claims fall to 197K for week ending Sept. 19

Continuing claims rose to 1.719M and the 4-week moving average declined to 202.25K, supporting a firmer US dollar tone.

US initial jobless claims fell to 197K for the week ending September 19, according to a US Department of Labor release cited by FXStreet. The latest reading came in below the 201K estimate and compared with 198K the prior week, which was revised from 196K.

The data also showed continuing jobless claims increased by 2K to 1.719M for the week ending September 12. The 4-week moving average dropped by 1.75K to 202.25K versus the previous week’s revised 204K.

FXStreet said the US dollar, tracked by the US Dollar Index (DXY), moved to fresh two-month highs around 101.30 as investors assessed the new labor-market figures. It added that labor market conditions and wage dynamics are closely watched by central banks because they can influence inflation expectations and monetary policy.

The release notes that the labor market is a key gauge of economic health, with high employment typically supporting consumer spending, while tight labor can also feed into inflation via wage growth and affect policy decisions.
