US invites Putin to attend G20 summit in Miami this December
The invitation, confirmed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is aimed at creating a diplomatic path to reduce fighting in Ukraine.
The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said September 23.
Rubio made the comments after meeting Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, and described the summit as an opportunity for Putin to engage with other world leaders in addition to US President Donald Trump.
The invitation was the first public confirmation that Washington had extended an invitation to Putin at the G20 leaders' level, rather than only at ministerial meetings.
Rubio said a Trump-Putin meeting could be possible if there is a clearly defined outcome, and he noted that preparatory work would be needed for such talks, while adding that Trump's openness to meeting adversaries helped drive the decision to invite Putin.
