White hats recover about 52 BTC from Coldcard exploit, trust portal launched

A Sept. 21 Bitcoin transaction to the Crypto Recovery Trust points to roughly 52.37 BTC, and owners can verify eligibility using their public addresses, with returns subject to verification.

CryptoSlate reports that Coldcard owners can now check publicly whether “white hats” recovered coins tied to the Coldcard-related exploit via a Crypto Recovery Trust portal. Galaxy researcher Alex Thorn linked a Sept. 21 Bitcoin transaction that includes a trust-claims reference for about 52.37 BTC from Coldcard-related clusters, and directed owners to search their public Bitcoin addresses at the trust site. According to CryptoSlate, a match allows an ownership claim to begin, but any return depends on verification. The check uses a public address, not a seed phrase or private key, and mempool status data cited by Thorn confirms the transaction in block 967,948. Thorn also flagged 3.0134 BTC entering the destination from addresses Galaxy had not previously tracked, which he described as potentially additional recoveries, though their Coldcard origin is still uncertain.

CryptoSlate also notes that digital-asset recovery firm DART previously said in an Aug. 17 report that it and independent researchers secured just over 50 BTC and placed the rescued Bitcoin with the Crypto Recovery Trust. DART says its trust process checks recovery records, chain of custody, and proof of ownership, including source-of-funds and exchange records, and that sanctions, competing claims, or other restrictions can affect any return.

The Coldcard “entropy flaw,” per CryptoSlate, made some older wallet seeds easier to reconstruct, and DART says seeds created under affected firmware remain exposed after a firmware update. CryptoSlate adds that DART warns against submitting seeds, private keys, PINs, or recovery codes through a web form, and that owners with exposed funds should follow the manufacturer’s migration guidance.
