Xi Trump summit focuses on strategic stability over deal headlines
Chinese researchers said the summit’s success may depend more on practical consensus under a new strategic stability framework than on large, headline-grabbing agreements.
SCMP Economy reports that Chinese researchers expect this week’s Xi Jinping and Donald Trump summit to hinge less on major, publicly touted deals and more on building practical, cautious consensus under a new strategic stability framework, amid a shifting balance of power between the United States and China.
The outlet says Chinese state media have given heavy coverage to Xi’s state visit to the United States, describing it as “historic” and of “milestone significance,” following Trump’s Beijing trip in May.
SCMP Economy also notes that Xi’s arrival in Washington on Wednesday drew extensive state-media imagery, including Trump greeting Xi on the tarmac with honor guards, military band performances of both national anthems, a 21-gun salute, and a jet flyover.
In contrast, American media coverage of Xi’s arrival was described as more muted, with major U.S. television networks maintaining a stand-off with the White House, after a pool including ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC boycotted coverage of Trump public events in protest over the administration’s ban on several media outlets, including CNN.
