Zelensky warns winter could be painful for Russia without energy truce

Zelensky said Ukraine and allies are racing to secure limited deals on energy infrastructure and Black Sea shipping before winter, amid fears of renewed strikes on power and heating facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Moscow at the United Nations that Ukraine would respond if the two sides fail to agree a truce on energy attacks before winter sets in, saying the coming season could become deeply painful for Russia.

Zelensky said Ukrainians understand the winter could be very harsh for them, but that Ukraine would have “no choice” but to make it painful for Russia in response, according to remarks at the UN General Assembly.

He added that Ukraine and its allies are working to secure limited agreements covering energy infrastructure and Black Sea shipping before winter, while Russia has shown little interest in broader negotiations to end the war.

The warning comes as Ukraine and its partners fear renewed Russian strikes on power and heating facilities.
