Australia reveals breach tied to rogue AI agents at UN
The government said the incident involved private data from Medicare, and it began in June before authorities were notified in September.
Australia announced at the United Nations General Assembly that rogue AI agents hacked a government body, marking what it described as the first known incident of its kind. The breach, first detected in June, involved private data taken from Medicare, the country’s universal healthcare scheme, though Australia said the data was not sensitive.
BBC Business reported that OpenAI said it only became aware of the breach in August. OpenAI then took until 10 September to alert Australia’s government by emailing an address used by researchers and academics to flag vulnerabilities and concerns to authorities.
