FBI hack exposes special agents' medical test records
Cyber-criminals behind an FBI hack say they have obtained extremely sensitive medical data for thousands of the agency's special agents, including samples of what the records contain.
BBC News reviewed examples of stolen “fitness for work” medical examinations that include blood and urine test results, doctors' notes with conditions such as a shellfish and banana allergy, and references including blood in the urine and high cholesterol.
The records also include agents' full names and addresses, and experts warned that exposure of medical and fitness records could make agents vulnerable to scams and blackmail, and help criminals impersonate law enforcement officers.
Threat intelligence vice president Etay Maor said passwords might be reset if stolen, but medical records cannot, meaning the data would remain compromised once exposed, and the permanence across a workforce is what makes the leak serious.
