Researchers publish Zcash-style design for private Bitcoin transfers
The proposal would use encrypted “notes” and zero-knowledge proofs to conceal senders, recipients and payment amounts while rejecting double spends via nullifiers.
Researchers at Bitcoin cryptography developer [[alloc] init] have published a design for “Zcash-style” private transfers that would hide the sender, recipient and amount of a payment while running on the existing Bitcoin network, according to Decrypt.
The 56-page paper, dated September 24, 2026, says Shielded Bitcoin would hold value as encrypted “notes,” with each transfer carrying a zero-knowledge proof that the sender controls the notes being spent and that inputs and outputs balance.
The design also describes a public marker called a nullifier, which would let software reject double spends without revealing which note was used.
In the proposed approach, transfers would be published as data on Bitcoin, while separate software called indexers would verify the proofs and rebuild the shielded state, Decrypt reports.
