UK AI supercomputer project delayed by power supply problems

The Loughton, Essex, site was expected to begin operating next year, but power issues could push startup from a 2027 target into the mid-2030s.

A major UK data center project billed as the country’s largest AI supercomputer, planned for Loughton in Essex, is facing delays due to power supply problems, according to the Guardian Business.

The outlet reports the project was previously expected to start operating next year, with a 2027 debut now at risk. Instead, the site could be held back into the mid-2030s as it struggles to secure enough power before coming online.

The project is being built by Nscale, a UK-based startup. The Guardian Business says Nscale is seeking a $35 billion, or £26 billion, flotation this year.

The Guardian Business also points to UK Power Networks, the firm that will connect the site to the grid, and notes the scheme was already under scrutiny after earlier reporting in March about the planned location being an operational scaffolding yard.
