US and China avoid confrontation, but targeted restrictions continue

The piece says the two sides moved away from last year's broad tariff war, while still keeping targeted restrictions and industrial measures in place.

SCMP Economy writes that when US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Washington this week, neither side chose confrontation, and China’s “constructive strategic stability” framing remains in play.

The outlet argues that even an uneasy truce in great power relations can help, because both sides have incentives to keep their economic rivalry from spiraling out of control, including through limited understandings aimed at reducing risks in areas such as artificial intelligence and other technologies.

SCMP Economy adds that the meeting does not end competition, noting that Washington and Beijing continue to differ on technology, industrial policy, security, and the shape of the international order, with Iran and Taiwan described as fraught topics.

It also says that while the two sides have moved away from the broad tariff war waged last year, targeted restrictions and industrial measures are still continuing.
