Xi urged Trump to oppose Taiwan independence after closed-door talks

Taiwanese officials and observers reacted cautiously to a Washington summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, with uncertainty about what the two leaders discussed regarding the island, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reported that the only public mention of Taiwan after Thursday’s closed-door talks came from Beijing’s official statement, which said Xi urged Trump to oppose “Taiwan independence” and handle the Taiwan question with caution.

SCMP Economy added that the White House did not immediately provide its own detailed account of the exchange.
