Paul Chan expects markets to respond positively to Xi-Trump summit

Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said easing geopolitical uncertainty could reduce investor concerns about economic prospects.

Hong Kong’s finance chief, Paul Chan Mo-po, said he expects investors to interpret the Xi-Trump summit positively, pointing to the potential for fewer geopolitical worries. Chan made the comments on a radio programme on Saturday, a day after Chinese President Xi Jinping completed a three-day visit to Washington to meet with his US counterpart Donald Trump.

Chan linked market uncertainty to past geopolitical concerns that affected perceptions of economic prospects, leading to capital flow volatility. He said that if geopolitical factors are mitigated, investors may feel more secure when adjusting their portfolios.

He also noted that while Xi and Trump agreed to continue talks, the summit had limited deliverables, according to the report.
