Suicide bombing hits police checkpoint in northwest Pakistan, killing 11

The blast in Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa killed at least 11 people and wounded about 30 others, with most casualties reported as security personnel and nearby passers-by.

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at a roadside police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing at least 11 people and wounding about 30 others, according to officials cited by SCMP Economy.

The attack took place in Dera Ismail Khan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for the provincial emergency service, said most of the deaths and injuries involved security personnel and passers-by, as reported by SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports that the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

The outlet also noted that Pakistan has seen a surge in militant attacks in recent years, including attacks claimed by the TTP and the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army, and that the TTP is separate from but allied with the Afghan Taliban that returned to power in 2021.
