Thousands march in Madrid to protest eviction of 87-year-old woman

Thousands of people marched through central Madrid on Saturday to protest the eviction of an 87-year-old woman, Maricarmen Abascal, from her lifelong home, demanding stronger tenant protections, according to SCMP Economy.

The protest follows images from Wednesday when police broke down her door and she was carried from her Madrid flat on a stretcher, a development that has brought Spain’s housing crisis back into the spotlight ahead of a general election due in 2027, SCMP Economy reported.

During the march, protesters rattled keys, blew whistles, chanted slogans and held banners urging measures to curb rising housing costs and make evictions more difficult, the outlet added.
