US, Denmark and Greenland sign deal enabling new Arctic bases
The agreement updates a 1951 defense pact and would expand the Pituffik US Space Force Base, plus add bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig subject to local and Danish approval.
Washington’s plan to expand its military presence in Greenland is being viewed by analysts as a potential deterrent to any future Arctic military cooperation involving China and Russia, according to SCMP Economy. The outlet said the move is designed to create a stronger US footprint in the region amid growing interest in the Arctic.
SCMP Economy reports that the US, Denmark and Greenland signed a defense deal on Tuesday that updates and amends a 1951 defense agreement. The pact allows Washington to expand and modernize the Pituffik US Space Force Base in northwestern Greenland and to establish additional military bases in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.
The deal also reaffirms Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, SCMP Economy said. While the agreement enables new bases, it notes that any additional bases would still require approval from Greenland and Denmark.
SCMP Economy added that Narsarsuaq is a settlement in southern Greenland with a former civilian airport and a US airbase that closed in 1958, and that the settlement has a population of only a few dozen people.
