Anthropic releases Claude Sonnet 5.5, claims faster coding and lower costs
Anthropic priced Sonnet 5.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, and it scored 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0.
Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5.5, an upgrade to its Sonnet 5 model from June, and says the mid-tier system runs more than 30% faster than its predecessor. In its announcement, the company positioned Sonnet 5.5 as especially strong for well-scoped everyday tasks like fixing bugs, producing polished documents, slides, and spreadsheets, and it highlighted what it called a sharp eye for design, while also stating the model shines at coding, according to Decrypt.
Decrypt reports that Anthropic kept pricing steady at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. That level is half what the company charges for its Opus 5.5, and while Sonnet 5.5 is not described as using the fewest tokens, Anthropic says it uses nearly a third less tokens per task, which it says makes the model cheaper to run.
On Terminal-Bench 4.0, a test of whether an AI agent can complete complex professional tasks by typing commands on its own, Decrypt says Sonnet 5.5 scored 70.6%. Opus 5.5 scored 66.4%, and Sonnet 5 scored 10.3%.
Decrypt also notes that an independent tester, Artificial Analysis, ran its own version and found Sonnet 5.5 at 63.6% and Opus 5.5 at 59.6%, alongside OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra at 59.1%.
