Avanti West Coast rail service to be nationalised from March

Avanti West Coast train services will be nationalised from March next year, the UK government announced, saying the plan is designed to improve rail infrastructure, cut train delays, and improve the passenger experience.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the service had underperformed for years, with passengers left dealing with cancellations and delays, and that the government is acting to address the issue.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham echoed the criticism, pointing to problems such as cancellations, delays, overcrowding, and a service he said had repeatedly failed passengers.

Avanti West Coast managing director Andy Mellors said the operator will work with the government over the coming months to ensure a seamless transition into public ownership while continuing to focus on customers and communities.
