UK to renationalise Avanti West Coast from March 2025
The government said the operator’s contract was due to end on 7 March, and the decision is tied to a plan aimed at cutting delays and improving the passenger experience.
The UK government announced that Avanti West Coast train services will be nationalised from March 2025, with the change intended to improve rail infrastructure and reduce delays, while enhancing the experience for passengers, according to BBC Business.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said passengers have been paying the price for years of underperformance, while Avanti West Coast managing director said he was proud of what the company achieved over the prior six years, per the outlet.
Avanti West Coast’s contract was due to come to an end on 7 March, and in a social media post Prime Minister Andy Burnham echoed the government’s criticism of cancellations, delays, and overcrowding, the BBC reported.
The outlet also noted that in May the company said one-in-seven services would be cut on its busiest routes after a government request to reduce spending, with Avanti forecasting minimum disruption from the change.
