California bans public officers from issuing political meme coins
The law, AB 2409, also limits crypto service providers from listing certain official-linked coins for California residents that are issued on or after Jan. 1, 2027.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2409 on Sept. 27, creating two restrictions tied to political meme coins, including a ban for certain public figures and limits for digital asset service providers.
Covered California public officers and certain government employees are barred from issuing political meme coins. The definition includes elected and appointed state or local officers, legislators, and members of government boards or commissions, and it can extend to advisory-board appointees and employees with decisionmaking authority over procurement offers and contracts.
AB 2409 also restricts crypto service providers from listing new official-linked coins for California residents. The listing provision applies to coins offered by or in partnership with a federal public official or a state or local public officer, as long as the coin is issued on or after Jan. 1, 2027, according to CryptoSlate.
