Hong Kong investigates yacht alleged to have nearly collided with rowers

Authorities are probing the incident after a near collision during a 40 km coastal rowing race in Sai Kung.

Hong Kong marine authorities have launched an investigation after a yacht allegedly sped toward a boat rowed by six athletes during a race in Sai Kung over the weekend, an act one participant described as deliberate, according to SCMP Economy.

The incident came to light on Sunday after one rower, Eddie Lam Yat-ming, an assistant professor at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University’s Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, shared footage on social media.

Lam said he was taking part in the 40 km Sai Kung Coastal Challenge near High Island Reservoir on Saturday, and the video he posted showed the yacht passing close to his boat at top speed in a near collision.

He added that the encounter caused his boat to rock violently in the yacht’s wake, prompting the authorities to investigate.
