US set to grant one-month Iran sanctions waiver for Najaf pilgrim flights
The waiver would permit Iraqi Airways flights between Iran and Najaf for one month, with a longer waiver possibly coming later, according to a person familiar with the discussions.
The Trump administration was set to grant a limited waiver to its Iran sanctions program on Monday to allow flights carrying Shiite Muslim religious pilgrims between Iran and Iraq, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said, according to SCMP Economy citing Reuters.
The US Treasury Department waiver would allow Iraqi Airways to fly back and forth between Iran and the Shiite holy city of Najaf in Iraq for one month, with the possibility of a more permanent waiver later.
The outlet said the move is intended to ease pressure on Iraq’s government under Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, who is seeking to deepen ties with Washington while also managing Iraq’s relationship with Iran.
