Vitalik Buterin says Hegota could be Ethereum's last normal fork
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said Hegota, a fork scheduled for next year, is likely to be Ethereum's last so-called normal fork, according to a post published Saturday by Buterin.
Buterin described the upgrades that would come after Hegota as based on recursive STARKs and automated formal verification, alongside heavily optimized consensus and steps aimed at making the system quantum safe.
In his post, Buterin also argued that post- Hegota Ethereum should be viewed less as a conventional blockchain and more as a hybrid construction that combines ideas associated with Satoshi Nakamoto with newer cryptographic machinery.
Buterin further said the planned changes would replace key properties including moving verification away from downloading and re-executing every block, toward sampling data with PeerDAS and checking a SNARK, while updating consensus toward a more optimized approach.
