Burnham’s GB Grid plan is not a move to nationalise the grid
Shares in London-listed National Grid and SSE fell about 0.5%, broadly in line with the wider market, as the plan was unveiled.
The Guardian Business reports that while Andy Burnham’s Great British Grid idea has sparked talk of public control of the electricity grid, the plan is not a threat to nationalise anything or seize control of existing assets.
The outlet says National Grid and SSE, the two listed operators in London, were down by about 0.5% following the energy department announcement, a move it described as mild and consistent with the broader market.
According to the article, the energy department’s details indicate Great British Grid is intended to complement rather than replace existing arrangements, addressing claims that it would take over current grid ownership.
The piece argues the core value of GB Grid is providing the regulator with better data, with the goal of helping drive down costs, rather than changing ownership through nationalisation.
