China warns Japan as Wang Yi meets executives led by Takeshi Iwaya

The meeting with the 50-member Japanese delegation marked the highest-ranking Chinese reception for a Japanese visit in nearly a year.

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi met Takeshi Iwaya, a former Japanese foreign minister leading a 50-member delegation of corporate executives, in Beijing on Monday, according to a readout from the Chinese foreign ministry, which described it as the highest-ranking reception for a Japanese visit in nearly a year.

Wang said bilateral ties were in a “severe situation” and “yet to be normalised,” ahead of next year’s 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the readout reported.

He also warned that Japan could not “open up a future” with the world if it challenges its post-war “peace constitution” or tries to rewrite history related to wartime aggression.

Wang urged Tokyo to correct what he called erroneous statements and actions from its leadership regarding Taiwan as soon as possible, according to the readout.
