Eiffel Tower operator chief to step down after women staff removed

An internal probe found operational flaws in organizing a Sept. 5 visit by the BAPS spiritual movement, which led to a staff walkout and a one-day closure of the monument.

The operator of the Eiffel Tower said its director general, Patrick Branco Ruivo, will step down at the end of this year following controversy over the removal of women staff during a visit by a Hindu religious group, according to Agence France-Presse as published by SCMP Economy.

SETE, the company that runs the Paris landmark, said an internal probe determined “operational flaws and shortcomings” in organizing the Sept. 5 visit led to the “unacceptable” removal of women staff.

The incident prompted a staff walkout and closure of the monument for one day, and it triggered criticism across France amid the country’s emphasis on secularism and gender equality, SCMP Economy reported.

SETE also said at the time that the Hindu delegation had requested that the visit be organized to limit interactions with women, and that those conditions should not have been accepted.
