India faces headwinds as oil prices rise and monsoon weakens

The outlook is tied to higher oil costs, with India importing most of its crude needs, and a weak monsoon raising broader inflation and policy risk.

LiveMint Markets reports that India’s economy and stock market face multiple headwinds, including rising oil prices linked to the US-Iran conflict and a weak southwest monsoon this year.

The piece says oil has been higher for most of the year due to supply disruptions, with the Strait of Hormuz only partially open, and it notes India is the world’s third-largest oil importer, meeting about 85-90% of oil requirements through imports.

According to LiveMint Markets, higher oil prices can affect India’s fiscal outlook, push up inflation, potentially lead to monetary tightening, weigh on demand, and erode corporate profitability.

The outlet also points to the monsoon ending weakly and unevenly, citing Motilal Oswal Financial Services, which highlighted the risk for the economy and markets as rainfall falls below expectations.
