Judge blocks Trump from conditioning counterterrorism grants on election changes
The ruling follows a DHS plan to hold back 20.0% of certain grant funding until states adopted the administration’s preferred election administration measures.
A U.S. judge blocked the Trump administration from conditioning counterterrorism funding to state and local governments on election administration changes, a decision that Reuters said is another setback for the president ahead of the November 3 midterms.
According to Reuters, Washington-based U.S. District Judge Amir Ali ruled in favor of counties and cities in Texas, Ohio, and Tennessee that sued to stop the policy, arguing it exceeded the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s authority.
Reuters reported earlier that the Department of Homeland Security announced it would withhold 20.0% of funding under grant programs tied to preparing for terrorist attacks and other threats until state or local governments adopted election administration measures favored by the administration.
Reuters said a separate legal challenge, filed by a coalition of mostly Democratic-governed states, is still pending, while the Monday ruling remains in effect.
