Labour prime minister outlines plan for government-backed GB Grid body

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, in his first address to the Labour party conference, outlined proposals for a new government-backed body to invest in the electricity grid, called Great British Grid.

The plan is presented as part of a broader effort to respond to rising energy costs and sluggish economic growth, with Burnham arguing that energy prices are crippling businesses and high for households.

According to the explainer, the GB Grid proposals build on a Labour manifesto pledge for Great British Energy, a state-owned company aimed at investing in renewables.

The article notes that GB Grid would face the challenge of lowering energy bills and boosting the economy through public investment in the power network.
