Most Americans fear severe weather but only 11% feel prepared

A COUNTRY Financial survey found concern is highest in the South at 90%, while only 11% of respondents say they feel highly prepared.

Eighty-four percent of Americans say they are concerned their community will face a severe weather event or natural disaster in the next 12 months, but just 11% report feeling highly prepared, according to a COUNTRY Financial survey cited by Risk & Insurance.

Risk & Insurance reports that 98% of respondents believe severe weather poses at least some risk to their lives today, with concern highest in the South at 90% compared with 78% in the Northeast, 85% in the Midwest and 79% in the West.

Among COUNTRY Financial’s key markets, the report found Wisconsin (93%), Illinois (92%) and Alabama (91%) posted the highest levels of concern. The report also says half of Americans, 50%, believe severe weather or disaster risk in their community has increased over the past.
