The Philippines faces 20,000 teaching vacancies to fill, according to disclosures at a budget hearing, where sector insiders said the gap points to a growing education crisis.

At a House of Representatives plenary session last week, Antonio Tinio of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers questioned officials over what he said was a lack of urgency, arguing that thousands of qualified applicants in the registry are still waiting for jobs.

The Education Department said some roles are “hard to fill” because they do not have qualified candidates for certain specialized positions, while teachers and stakeholders are calling for more transparency in how the hiring process is run.
