Trump backs India-Europe trade corridor via Middle East
The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, unveiled at the 2023 G20, is still largely unfinished, with key rail links and port connections under development.
Trump’s recent endorsement has put renewed attention on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, a trade initiative that links India to Europe via the Middle East, according to SCMP Economy.
The project, known as IMEC, was unveiled at the 2023 G20 summit and is positioned as an alternative to existing routes and China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
SCMP Economy reports that IMEC involves a mix of shipping lanes, railways, energy pipelines and data cables, and is backed by India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and the European Union.
While some parts of the proposed route can use existing infrastructure, SCMP Economy notes that key rail connections, ports and other links are still being built, as analysts argue the corridor may need to expand to remain viable amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
