US dependence on Chinese minerals faces risk from Canada tensions

A former U.S. sanctions official said the U.S. needs Canadian mining expertise to reduce reliance on China.

Washington’s hostility toward Canada could undermine U.S. efforts to lessen dependence on Chinese minerals, according to Edward Fishman, a former U.S. sanctions official, speaking at the Mining Forum Americas in Colorado Springs, as reported by Mining.com.

Fishman said the United States has the money and political will to invest in mineral supplies, but it needs Canadian and Australian mining expertise to develop those sources.

He warned that antagonizing Canada would make it virtually impossible for the U.S. to break its dependence on China, arguing the U.S. cannot do it without Canadian support.

The remarks highlighted what Fishman described as a contradiction in Washington’s minerals strategy: securing supplies requires cooperation with allies even as trade disputes strain those relationships, while creating uncertainty for mining firms about where they can build, process, and sell output.
