Yen steadies near 157.40 as intervention risks temper traders
USD/JPY held near 157.4 on Tuesday, while Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama repeated warnings about an undervalued yen and said Japan will coordinate with the US Treasury for orderly FX conditions.
USD/JPY was steady near 157.40 on Tuesday, according to FXStreet, trading virtually unchanged on the day at the time of writing.
The pair is caught between support for the US dollar tied to expectations of further US monetary tightening and caution among traders over the risk that Japanese authorities intervene to support the yen, FXStreet reported.
FXStreet also noted that Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama stepped up Tokyo’s warnings, saying an undervalued yen generally causes problems, and she indicated agreement with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to strengthen cooperation during their September 25 talks.
Katayama said Japan will continue communicating closely with the US Treasury to support orderly conditions in the foreign exchange market, reinforcing investor caution following recent Japanese warnings about yen weakness.
