Bain estimates AI firms need $6T in annual revenue by 2031
Bain & Co. projects existing consumer and enterprise AI services could reach up to $1.8T yearly revenue, leaving a $4.2T gap to justify data center spending.
Data center investment is accelerating as the artificial intelligence arms race drives demand for digital infrastructure, but consulting firm Bain & Co. warns that returns depend on revenue growth that does not yet exist, according to a report released this week.
Bain projects the AI industry will need to generate $6T in annual revenue by 2031 to justify the wave of capital flowing into data center development. The report estimates current AI services, including consumer-facing products and enterprise AI applications, could generate up to $1.8T of that total.
That leaves a $4.2T annual revenue gap that Bain says would have to emerge by 2031, over roughly the next four and a half years.
Bain also argues that productivity gains from existing enterprise and consumer applications will not be enough, and that entirely new markets must form to close the funding gap. The report notes it remains unclear where the missing revenue will come from.
