Broward County considers repurposing a shuttered middle school site

Enrollment declines in South Florida have led some public schools to shutter and consolidate, and local officials are now exploring how to repurpose the resulting underutilized real estate, according to Bisnow.

Broward County school officials voted in January to close Plantation Middle School at 6600 W. Sunrise Blvd., with students consolidated into a nearby high school for the 2026-2027 school year.

At a South Florida K-12 Education Real Estate Summit, school district officials said they are looking for ways to put the closed-site inventory to use, but they are wary of unsolicited proposals.

Palm Beach County School District chief operating officer Joseph Sanches said government officials often do not trust the private sector to produce “the right” deals when proposals are not solicited, fearing they may be priced too high.
