Dogecoin application layer DogeOS opens public testnet

DogeOS runs as a separate application layer on Dogecoin, with fees on the testnet paid in DOGE.

DogeOS, a new application layer built on top of the Dogecoin network, has opened a public testnet for developers, according to Decrypt. The project describes a testnet as a trial environment where teams can test applications before using real money.

DogeOS is intended to add app functionality on Dogecoin, with its documentation framing Dogecoin as the ledger and DogeOS as the software layer that runs alongside it rather than changing the coin itself. The MyDoge wallet team founded the project, which it says operates as a separate layer.

Technically, DogeOS is described as an “Application Layer rollup network on Dogecoin” running on a zkVM that generates cryptographic proofs, sometimes described as math receipts that transactions are valid. The network is also EVM compatible, so Ethereum-style smart contracts, wallets, and tools are expected to work there.

On the testnet, users would pay fees in DOGE, the native coin of Dogecoin. Decrypt also notes Dogecoin was created in 2013 by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus.
