Environment Agency warns millions in England about flood risk

The Environment Agency urged homeowners in England to check whether their properties are at risk of flooding ahead of what it described as a wet and stormy winter start, citing the next three months as more likely than usual to bring wet and windy weather.

The agency said more than two million people do not realize their properties face flooding risk, and it warned that residents in a third of the roughly six million properties most at risk are unaware of the threat.

According to the Environment Agency, the increased risk is linked to a combination of large-scale weather patterns and the subtle impact of a supercharged El Niño.

The agency urged residents to use the government website to verify their flood risk and to take steps to prepare.
