Glencore coal mine approvals extended to 2045 in NSW
The New South Wales Independent Planning Commission approved mining at the Hunter Valley HVO North and South open pits through 2045, extending operations that were set to expire at the end of 2026.
Glencore’s Hunter Valley thermal coal complex in Australia has received state approval to continue mining until 2045, according to Mining.com citing Reuters. The New South Wales Independent Planning Commission approved continuation at the HVO North and South open pits near Singleton, clearing the way for the Glencore-Yancoal joint venture to extract about 429 million tonnes of coal. The operations had been facing the expiry of existing approvals at the end of 2026, and the decision preserves work for more than 1,500 people and ties to more than 800 suppliers, the outlet said. Mining.com also reported that the commission found the project’s social and economic benefits outweighed potential environmental impacts, with more than 10,000 public submissions submitted and about 60% supporting the extension.
