Hong Kong police arrest Boom News founder Tang Ho-wing on disinformation charge

Tang Ho-wing, 37, was detained around 7am on Wednesday and runs the social media outlet Boom News, which had about 66,000 Instagram followers as of then.

Hong Kong national security police have arrested Tang Ho-wing, the 37-year-old founder of online outlet Boom News, on suspicion of incitement by spreading disinformation, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The source said Tang was apprehended at around 7am on Wednesday. Tang is known online as “Boom head” and “Bobby.”

Before founding Boom News in 2020, Tang previously worked as a journalist for the Chinese University of Hong Kong student newspaper, Chinese University Student Press, and the news section of the local online forum HK Golden.

Boom News primarily operates on social media platforms, and as of Wednesday morning it had around 66,000 followers on Instagram, the source said.
