Millennium Management opens a new Sydney office as it expands in Australia

The New York hedge fund said it has built a roughly 20-person team in Australia and plans to seed a new long-short equity fund launched by Anthony Aboud.

Millennium Management is expanding its Australia footprint, building out a Sydney-based team as it develops local operations, according to Hedgeweek, citing a Capital Brief report.

The $97bn multi-strategy manager opened a new office in Sydney's central business district and put the effort behind earlier this month, with Millennium president and chief operating officer Ajay Nagpal and Benjamin Williams, the firm's head of business development for Asia, in attendance.

Hedgeweek said Millennium now has around 20 employees in Australia following hires and investment moves, including the July addition of Shaurya Visen, formerly Bank of America's head of Australian industrials research.

The firm also agreed to provide seed capital to a new long-short equity fund launched by former Perpetual portfolio manager Anthony Aboud, and Hedgeweek noted the Australian operation remains less visible than Millennium's established offices elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region.
