Two million people in England may not realize flood risk

The Environment Agency says residents of about 6 million at-risk properties should prepare for a wetter, windier start to winter.

The UK Environment Agency says more than two million people in England are unaware their properties face a flood risk, as the country braces for a wet and stormy start to winter.

The agency warned that experts expect the next three months to be more wet and windy than usual, citing large scale weather patterns and the subtle impact of a supercharged El Niño, which it said increases flooding risk.

Environment Agency officials also said a third of the roughly six million properties deemed most at risk have not been made aware of the threat, and urged residents to check a government website to see whether their property is in an at risk area and to take preparedness steps.
