UK police find petrol, not explosives, in Fairford airbase probe
Police said vehicles seized near Royal Air Force Fairford were extensively examined and no improvised explosive devices were found, but a quantity of petrol was recovered.
A UK counterterrorism investigation into a suspected bomb plot at Royal Air Force Fairford, a base used by the United States, has been thrown into confusion after police said they found no explosives.
According to National Counter Terrorism Policing head Laurence Taylor, investigators have extensively examined the seized vehicles and confirmed that no improvised explosive devices were found, while also recovering a quantity of petrol.
The probe began after police were called to the base on Sunday when a resident reported several vans acting suspiciously, leading to the evacuation of the nearby village and the declaration of a major incident, Agence France-Presse reported.
The incident also sparked questions after five London-based Britons were released on bail on Monday following arrests early Sunday on explosives and terror offences, with Washington criticizing the release, the outlet said.
