UK says under-16 social media ban is only a step in its crackdown

The government’s broader platform restrictions for under-16s, plus limits for 16- and 17-year-olds, are set to take effect in March.

UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told technology firms that the government’s online safety crackdown is not finished, describing the under-16 ban from social media platforms as only a staging post, according to the Guardian Business.

Nandy said earlier announced rules would bar teenagers under 16 from accessing high-risk social media apps, while safer platforms would face different restrictions.

The package includes restrictions for 16- and 17-year-olds on websites that allow infinite scrolling and algorithmic content that can push harmful material into feeds, along with tighter age-verification checks, the Guardian Business reported.

Nandy said the changes are scheduled to come into effect in March, and vowed the government should go further, adding that the effort should not be accepted as the end of the policy push.
